Our Team
Heather Scott, Founder & President
The moment I saw and experienced Equine Assisted Learning, I knew it was for me! The business started in 2009 in Minnesota. After getting married and moving to Arizona in 2017, my husband, Russ, and I decided to restart in 2022 as a non-profit. We do not want anyone to miss taking a class or workshop because of cost (scholarships available). From CEO to single mom, we say YES! We are passionate about serving Christ and our community.
I grew up in North Dakota, where the love for horses started in the womb (my mom and grandfather were horse people). I have a 25- year career in Social Work (Master’s degree), and also built a cleaning company from the ground up for 7 years. My leadership gifts include observation, asking good questions, listening and facilitation. My husband and I hold certification from the founder of Equine Assisted Learning, Greg Kersten, OK Corral Series.
Justin Hartman, Ed. D, Vice President
Born on a cattle ranch in northeastern Arizona, I spent more than 20 years serving in the public school system, primarily as a school leader. Then my wife, Candace, and I felt a profound calling to enter school ministry. Today, we are honored to lead Verde Christian Academy together. As proud parents of two adult daughters, our family is deeply rooted in faith and service.
The principle of True Grit has transformed my approach to leadership, empowering me to collaborate with my staff without fear of failure or the pressure to have all the answers. This shift in perspective has enriched my relationships with colleagues, advancing not only our school but also the Kingdom we seek to serve.
Kathy Ware, Secretary/Treasurer
I am a third generation Arizonan. I was born in Ajo, Arizona, but have lived in Cottonwood, Arizona most of my life. I raised my daughter in Cottonwood and have many family and friends in the Verde Valley.
My daughter lives in Monterey, CA with her husband. I have 3 grandchildren 26, 13 and 11 years of age. I am a real estate agent and enjoy hiking, golfing, traveling, reading, spending time with friends and family. I am active in my church and community.
When I first experienced True Grit Leadership, I was looking for something that would lead to learning more about myself. Working with Heather and the horses helped me to realize some unhealthy thinking, which produced a desire to change. I joined the team because I see True Grit’s value in serving our community.
Cindy Millar, Director of Marketing
I was born and raised here in the Verde Valley and met my husband Mark in 5th grade. We have been married since 1982 and have 2 kids and 2 grandkids. I assisted in our construction business while being a stay at home mom until we retired in 2019. I am passionate about God, my family, traveling and hobbies!
I have been the Director of Women’s Ministry since 1988,at Verde Community Church.
I was introduced to True Grit Leadership and immediately knew this was a new way for God to use me in the lives of many people.
Russ Scott, Horse Expert
I grew up in Wyoming, where horses have been a way of life (farrier and trainer since age 15). My other work experiences have been maintenance, heating and cooling, glass installation, caregiving, and trail guide.
As I was becoming certified in Equine Assisted Learning, the “light bulb” went off and I realized how differently horses were interacting and used by the people. The purpose was different, and it is intriguing to watch how people can learn from the horses in a whole new way.
